The Detroit Zoo is a magical place to visit and in the 1980s and 90s, you didn’t need to look far to find sets of these elephant footprints to guide you to the different exhibits. The zoo retired its two elephants, Winky and Wanda, in 2005 and relocated them to California, being the first zoo to do so on ethical grounds because of the harsh winters. As the elephants disappeared, so did the footprints that led an untold number of families through the winding paths of the Detroit Zoo.
