Lion Fountain on Belle Isle notecard

$3.50$24.00

In the early 1900’s, the city of Detroit was bequeathed a large sum of money by James Scott, a man notorious for stirring up trouble with his words and actions. The money was to build a fountain on Belle Isle with one stipulation: that a life sized statue of Scott be included. It took 15 years for the construction to be completed, mostly due to the many objections of rewarding a man with a reputation for gambling and dirty jokes. Ultimately, the James Scott Memorial Fountain was built, but cleverly included a statue of Scott sitting in a chair looking out toward the Detroit River so that passersby would only be able to see his face if they walked in front of it.
